""We know now there were no weapons of mass destruction over there. [Standing Ovation] But Coretta knew and we know that there are weapons of misdirection right down here. Millions without health insurance. Poverty abounds. For war billions more but no more for the poor."

What do you think about this???? On the one hand, I really liked that the big ugly duo in the background were called out repeatedly for what they were...on the other hand, all the joking and laughing between white men over a dead black woman's body was a bit disgusting to me...it didn't look like the daughter found much of the joking very funny either...
and bush senior might've well have just out and said, "oh, I love how happy you colored folks are" for all his stumbling and "this is amazing" and "i'm from a quiet church..."
either way, it took a lot of guts to call the ugly duo out, and maya was especially amazing..I got all teary eyed...oh, and I was ESP impressed how so many of the speakers brought in CSK's support of queer folks...i think the rev did and maya...and both times it was mentioned, the congregation gave loud applause...baby steps, but still steps...

BFP,

I didn't actually get to see the entire funeral. But I saw clips of what each of the pres's said. Bush Sr.'s "colored folk sure are happy (and I can't for the life of me figure out why)". Clinton's gesture toward the future president and verbal battles with Bush.

Alll over Coretta Scott King's body. There's more than just a body in there...

Once again some "colored" body becomes the means by which, the point through which, some argument of national proportions takes place.

In terms of black bodies, or black and poor bodies, Anita Hill/Clarence Thomas, Rodney King, Emmett Till, Katrina Refugees, etc.
